How To Create network Patch cable (straight-through and crossover)

Network cables are available is standard sizes in the market. what if you need a cable with your desired length. Let me explain here how to create your own network patch cable either straight-through or crossover.

Whats you need to have:
  • Network cable Cat5 or Cat6
  • RJ-45 Crimping tool
  • RJ-45 Connectors
  • Wire cutter
  • Cable tester
Fist of all you need to do is to cut the cable of your desired length. Remove the outer skin of cable about 1 inch from both sides to expose the inner wires so you can work. There you will have 4 pairs of wires.

Figure A:
Straight-through Cable:

After you peel the outer skin off, separate the individual wires. You have to cute away the insulation between the inner wires. Once you have the wires separated, you have to make sure those wires are as straight as possible.

Figure B:
You have to grab the RJ-45 connector in the same way as in the figure B and use the following combination to make a straight-through cable in Figure C.

Insert the cables into the RJ-45 connector and punch with the crimping tool. You have to make both side of the cable with the same combination of wires for straight-through cable.

Crossover Cable:

User the following combination of wires to create a crossover cable. Create one end of the cable same as in figure C and other end with the help of figure D.

Figure D:

Testing the connection:

You can check the cable always to plug it in but the better way is to check the cable with cable tester. This is always a must if you are creating a number of cables or you are creating cables that will then be deployed to a remote location.

Good Luck,
